What is Not Covered in Health Insurance

Health insurance usually does not cover all medical expenses. HMO plan will offer more benefits compare to the fee for service health insurance plan. Some of the expenses that are generally not covered by the health insurance plan include eyeglasses, hearing aids, cosmetic surgery, medical checkups, experimental medical procedures, and etc.

Medical cost for pregnancy complications is covered in the health insurance. However, medical fees related to normal pregnancy are not covered by the health insurance plan. Eyeglasses and hearing aids are cheap so they are not covered in the health insurance. Most people can afford the eyeglasses and hearing aids so health insurers decide not to include them in the coverage plan.

Health insurers also like to exclude preexisting medical conditions in the health insurance. However, federal laws have put a limit on such exclusions. If you suffer from a preexisting condition, it is best that you sign up for limited benefit health insurance plan. The limited benefit health insurance plan does not ask for your weight and will cover most of the preexisting conditions. It is cheaper to buy a limited benefit health insurance plan than buying the standard individual health insurance plan.

Most health insurers won’t pay duplicate benefits. If you and your partner jointly sign up for the health insurance program, both of you will receive coverage that not exceed the agreed 100% of the compensation in the policy.

To find out a list of fees that are not covered, you should check with your health insurer. By asking the health insurer, you will know what supplemental health insurance you should buy.
