Water Damage and Home Insurance

The home insurance policies offers coverage against water damages such as pipe leakage, holes in the ceiling caused by rain and etc. However, it does not provide coverage for flood. If your home is damaged by water, the microorganism such as bacteria and fungus can quickly grow and contaminate the area within one to two days.

Homeowners must take action immediately so that the contamination won’t spread to other areas. Examples of dangerous water damage contamination include mold. The microbial contamination can cause the inhabitants in the house to develop complications such as sinusitis and nosebleeds. Homeowners should not attempt to clean up the area and let the professional handle the job. Improper clean up can cause the area even more contaminated.
After you have determined the area that is damaged by water, you must report and file a claim against water damage to your insurance company. The insurance company will send someone to evaluate the severity of the damage. Most of the time, the contractors will repair the area by rebuilding the structure and painting it. The person that performs the repair must be well trained so that the home can be trained properly. If the worker is not skilled, the microorganism contamination will continue to remain in the area.

Before filing the claim, make sure you check your insurance policy to see whether it cover water damage. Some policies cover water damage while others don’t. The item which suffers from water damage must be covered in the insurance policy otherwise the insurer will not offer compensation.
